Jane Austen's Mafia DVD (1998)

As DVDs go there's little to complain about picture or sound quality from "Jane Austen's Mafia". It's hard though to imagine why you'd ever want to own this disc.

Directed by Jim Abrahams this should surely be a belter of a comedy. After all he was part of the team that brought us the hilarious "Naked Gun" movies, the weird but wonderful "Top Secret", and possibly the funniest film of all time, "Airplane". But now on his own, Abrahams has foisted the boring and desperately silly "Hot Shots" films upon us and now this garbage as well.

Starring a frail Lloyd Bridges as a Mafia godfather, this is a film conceived and made in a laughter-less vacuum. Once you start watching it you'll be gasping for any excuse to escape the clutches of this monstrously unfunny travesty.

But should you need proof for yourself then you'll find that from the warm sun-kissed Italian countryside scenes to the bright neon of the casinos, there is little faulting the picture quality. The sound is equally good, if uneventful. But how will you appreciate this after clawing your eyes out and eating your ears to try and blank out this film?
