Leon DVD (1994)

Jean Reno plays the cool hitman whose ordered life is turned upside down after saving the young Mathilda (Natalie Portman) as her family are gunned down by a maniacal Gary Oldman.

"Leon" was the first Luc Besson film that not only offered his usual visual flair but good characterisation as well. It would have been fascinating if this DVD could have offered some insight into the making of the film but unfortunately there are no extras available on this disc.

Thankfully the transfer quality is good, with strong colours and the glowing lighting scheme bathing the film with radiance.

The real benefit of watching this film on DVD is the 5.1 digital soundtrack. The quirky but eminently cool mood of the film relies heavily on Eric Serra's atmospheric music score. On disc you benefit from deep earthy beats from the sub woofer underscoring moments of approaching menace. Meanwhile the melody swaps between the other speakers to great effect.

The lack of extras is very disappointing but the digital soundtrack adds so considerably to the enjoyment of this film that this disc is a worthwhile investment for fans.

A 'version integrale' with 24 minutes of extra footage is available on Region 1 DVD.
