The Way of the Gun (2000)
18

Parker and Longbaugh are two modern day desperados who hatch a spontaneous plan to kidnap surrogate mother Robin when she is just weeks away from giving birth to the child of Hale Chiddick, a powerful money launderer. Complications occur in their rush for the border as Chiddick sends various people after them to get back the girl and the money.

McQuarrie, best known for scripting "The Usual Suspects" has produced a film that represents a step forward in the crime genre. A cross between Tarantino and Peckinpah, it combines an amusing, dark script with constant action. Parker (Ryan Phillippe) and Longbaugh (Benicio Del Toro) are not nice guys, however, you can't help warming to them. Phillippe is at a slight disadvantage due to his youthful good looks; Benicio del Toro however, excels in this kind of role where a character's menace can hang on how he smokes a cigarette.

Both of these young actors lose out to a scene-stealing performance from James Caan as the world weary button man, sent to track them down. Some of the scenes between Sarno (Caan) and Abner (Geoffrey Lewis), his contemporary, are the best in the film. That said, all the performances are excellent, and the script lives up to expectations by moving at a fast pace with numerous twists and turns. This is a film where nobody can win and in which there is a lot of violence. McQuarrie wanted to make a film that reflected reality, where you can empathize with bad guys who never show remorse, one can only hope reality isn't quite like this.
