The Perfect Storm DVD (2000)

Get ready for a deluge of added features with the "The Perfect Storm" DVD.

They complement a movie that proves how CGI is consistently getting more realistic. DVD can often sharpen up process shots and expose their digital origins. There's no fear of that on this disc which makes the most of a dark blue sea and even darker hues.

As you can imagine, the sound track is a mighty affair and it comes in a Dolby Digital 5.1 EX mix. You can still play this on your existing 5.1 set-up and you'll have plenty to keep you happy. But if you have the cash to splash, then fork out on a 5.1 EX compatible amplifier and add a centre rear speaker to your already crowded room. This will allow you to enjoy ridiculous waves to wash around your living room, before crashing into your sub woofer.

Once you've recovered from that assault on the senses, then have a browse through the real footage and interviews with members of the local community, upon which the real story is based. Sebastian Junger, who wrote the book the film is based on, adds his interesting thoughts in the feature length commentary that accompanies the film.

Director Wolfgang Petersen also does a commentary that concentrates on the special effects. He discusses how the movie was originally envisaged in a separate section of conceptual drawings, available on the disc.

And if you still crave more of this seafaring disaster, then you'll be able to content yourself with an HBO documentary, James Horner discussing his score, and an advert to buy the said music on CD.
