Okay, so they make their living out of movies, but some directors just can't seem to stop taking the mickey out of the industry that puts food on their table.
Of course, John Waters has more reason than most film-makers to satirise Hollywood. After all, cult movies like "Pink Flamingos" and "Hairspray", that have built him a loyal following, have also been infuriating the mainstream for years. More recently, Waters' exploits have grown slightly tamer, but "Cecil B. Demented" (a title just waiting to happen) stills displays his offbeat sensibility and caustic wit.
Cecil B. Demented (Stephen Dorff) is a moviemaker. He's also insane. So when he decides to get a bonafide star to appear in his film, he does what any bonkers person would do - he kidnaps one. She happens to be Honey Whitlock (Melanie Griffith) a typically spoiled celeb, who is initially repelled by Cecil and his weird, horny cronies (including Alicia Witt and Adrian Grenier).
However, as Cecil and his crew embark on their guerrilla mission to destroy mainstream cinema - which essentially involves a mix of amateurish acting and extreme violence - Honey soons finds herself rather taken with it.
Sly, strange, and very funny, "Cecil B. Demented", will particularly appeal to movie buffs relishing in its absurdity, and extracting, would you believe it, splendid comedic performances from both Dorff and Griffith.
But while it is stamped with the trademark John Waters kookiness, this also has something to say to us all, which can really only be explained in Cecil's wacko terms. Basically, all films are rubbish unless they come from the extraordinary mind of Cecil B. Demented.
