Night of The Living Dead DVD (1990)

Plenty of people might wonder why anyone should remake "Night of the Living Dead". An explanation for this and a good transfer of this 1990 version can be found on the DVD release.

The picture transfer is good throughout and the eerie night time scenes look sharp, with plenty of flesh-rotting detail to wince at.

The soundtrack is a vast improvement over the flat and lifeless 1990s VHS release. The film's "Ultra Stereo" recording format has been remixed into a 2.0 Dolby track that does plenty to add atmosphere. It could still do with a bit more kick in the bass department, but it is far more fun than it used to be.

The DVD offers quality rather than quantity in terms of extra features. The best is "The Dead Walk" featurette. Anyone who is a fan of the original "Night of the Living Dead" will find some interesting comments on that production, as well as the remake. Important crew members ended up working on both movies and compare and contrast each version.

The featurette was made in 1999, as was the commentary by director Tom Savini. The time away from the film means that both offer retrospective thoughts on the production that answer to any criticisms made at the time of release.

Anyone who would like to get into special effects will find plenty to fascinate them on the disc. Tom Savini explains many of the effects on offer and showcases some of the scenes deleted due to their gory content.
