The Criminal

Interviewed by James Mottram

Who do you play in "The Criminal"?

I play Sarah, the femme fatale who kickstarts the plot surrounding one Jasper Rawlins, played by Steven Mackintosh. We meet at the beginning and seduce each other in a bar, then I lead him into this downward spiral of events. You learn more about her in flashback than in the present.

Did you model her on a particular femme fatale from cinema's past?

I didn't model her on anyone, because that style comes very much with the way that the director, Julian Simpson, shot it. I didn't know how it was going to look so it was more about playing it, really. It's a modern film noir. It has that look, it's quite shadowy, but in other ways it's very contemporary. The dialogue is sharp and colloquial.

What made you want to play the role?

I was sent the script a long time ago. It was one of those scripts that after only reading a couple of lines, I was intrigued by. You think you know what's going on, and there's a twist in the story that takes you somewhere else. Especially with the first scene, with Sarah and Jasper in the bar. That story really could go anywhere. It could turn into a romance. And when you read a script where the character you play is dead within ten pages, you think "Oh, thanks very much!"
