The trend for setting a horror film within another continues with what appears initially to be an interesting Australian effort. But as is typical with this unimaginative sub-genre, the film makers quickly bottle out and go for the safest and most contrived shock devices.
It's 1985, and Kylie Minogue is a Z-grade slasher director. (So as you can see, there is some humour here.) Her flick "Hot Blooded" is halted when an actor goes mad and butchers poor old Ms Minogue.
The film is canned and the masked maniac never caught. But 14 years later a bunch of spunky Australian film students get permission to finish the movie. Despite warnings, they're soon back at the original and very isolated house where the flick was being shot.
Once at the house, "Cut" turns into a dull rip-off of "Friday the 13th". The only twist is that we now have two masked men: one the original maniac, the other an actor. Unfortunately this potentially effective (but unoriginal) premise is not properly exploited. And what follows is a predictable and boring (if somewhat nauseating) sequence of gruesome murders.
This film does boast impressive effects but these swamp any tension, especially in the last ten minutes as director Kimble Rendall starts mimicking the very worst moments of the Freddy Krueger sequels. With any remnants of fear gone, the movie expires into a silly and disappointing heap.
