John Turturro plays a tortured chess genius in the interesting "The Luzhin Defence". Don't count on learning much about the background of this film on DVD, despite the fact that it teases you with little glimpses.
The picture transfer is reasonable but could be slightly clearer. It's better than the VHS rental release, so is certainly the preferred format for watching this film.
A handsome 5.1 sound mix adds layers of atmosphere by placing subtle effects around the speakers, enhancing the on-screen drama.
Apart from the trailer, the only added extra is a 'making of' featurette. At just over two minutes long, it's value is questionable. Emily Watson, John Turturro, and director Marleen Gorris offer a few comments but as you can imagine, there's not enough time for them to elaborate on the points they are trying to make.
