Strangers on a Train DVD (1951)

A chance meeting on a train, the casual discussion of murder, and the implications that lead to certain doom tantalise in a trademark Hitchcock thriller. Fans will be intrigued to see this DVD release as it offers a recently found UK pre-release print with two extra minutes of footage.

The US version on side A has the better picture quality, with relatively clear visuals. The British cut is darker in contrast and not so good with detail, although it's an improvement on old VHS releases of the US cut.

Accompanying the black and white thrills is a strong mono track, with the British version somewhat quieter in levels.

Extra features comprise of a trailer and a minute of silent newsreel footage of Hitchcock. Far more interesting though is the extra two minutes of the UK print. The lavish and unstable side of Walker's character gains emphasis in this cut, while the scene of Farley Granger encountering a dog is shown here filmed in near total silence, and it works far better than the animal's growling of the final release.

A must for fans and an important addition to the slow trickle of Hitchcock DVDs now available.
