If you ever wondered what happened to that 'angry young man' of 1970s Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan, then look no further. In "Ek Rishtaa" ('one relationship') he plays the mature and mellow Vijay Kapoor who has worked from nothing to create an industrial empire. The one thing that hasn't changed, however, is that he has strong principles and likes to stick to them.
Enter newly graduated son (Akshay Kumar) who has very different views on how to run a business - and there you have it. Their relationship is the main thrust of the film as they discover the pros and cons of running a business and a family by experience over education.
As is sometimes the case with Hindi films, they take some time to get going but when they do, they can throw a mighty punch. How mighty this punch is isn't certain, but it's definitely thrown and thus the second half of the film is far more interesting to watch than the first, which takes too long establishing characters, some of whom seem surplus to requirements.
The father-son bond is not the only relationship under observation, the film also touches on the husband-wife, brother-sister, mother-son relationships, which makes you wonder why they called it "Ek Rishtaa" at all.
But that's a minor quibble as the real pleasure of this film is Amitabh's performance - is it any wonder ? This man is good value for money on the big screen.
