The 6th Day DVD (2000)

Arnie gets cloned in "The 6th Day" and is predictably displeased about it, thus launching himself on another chase to find the truth before it kills him. In an interesting development, the Region 2 DVD release has far more features that the US Region 1 disc, also released by Columbia TriStar.

As per usual, Columbia ensures that this big budget release boasts superb picture quality, especially during the many CGI sequences.

The 5.1 sound mix does everything it possibly can to convince you that you're sitting through an exciting movie; with excellent bass-underpinned effects making the most of the surround speakers.

Extra features are headlined with a cheesy, but nevertheless interesting 'making of' documentary entitled "The Future is Coming". Time is spent on the usual yawn-inducing cast and crew character motivation comments, but there are also some good dissections of the special effects. If that whets your appetite for more, then you'll find the 'On the 6th Day' section with nine breakdowns of various process shots quite enjoyable. Of especial interest is a stunt fall section, where the technology for achieving gasp-inducing falls (without maiming the humans involved) is revealed.

The tongue-in-cheek humour of "Total Recall" is mildly recreated for "The 6th Day" in the form of the 'Re-Pet' pet cloning adverts. These are included on the disc, along with filmographies, isolated music score, and some good storyboard comparisons. It's the type of DVD package that could almost convince you that "The 6th Day" is a better movie than it really is.
