Out of Depth

Interviewed by Anwar Brett

"Out of Depth" is based on a true story, did that add to its appeal?

Whether this was true or not I'd still have felt the same way about it, I would have given my right arm for the part. It is a dream job for a young actor, and the fact that it is a true story just adds another dimension to it. There are more sides to it, and you can feel the pain in some of the scenes because of that.

People might think of it as a "Lock Stock"/"Snatch"-type film. Is it?

I don't want audiences to assume that it's yet another British gangster movie, because this really isn't. "Out of Depth" is much more a story about a mother and her son, the things we do for those we love, and how it can all end when it goes wrong. It's a really different type of movie, so I really hope people don't lump it in with all those genre films.

Is it ever irritating that people will constantly bring up your spell on Grange Hill or EastEnders when you want to prove yourself as an actor in your own right?

Not at all. I've grown up in public, from the age of ten and I think it's been slow but steady progress. And since the age of four I can remember wanting to be in movies, so starring in "Out of Depth" now is really all my birthdays and Christmasses come at once.
