Super 8 Stories (2002)

A massive cult phenomenon in their native Balkans, the gypsy-jazz-punk band No Smoking is best known throughout the rest of the world for their musical contributions to the films of director and band member Emir Kusturica (particularly "Black Cat, White Cat").

As "Super 8 Stories" sets out to prove, they were also deeply involved in the political upheaval of post-Tito Yugoslavia, tapping into the anarchic mood of discontent and rebellion that swept through the country.

Unfortunately, Kusturica's "Super 8 Stories" doesn't actually give us any insight into the band's origins or politics. Immersing us in the anarchic world of this sprawling ensemble through concert footage, Super 8 home movies and impromptu interviews, Kusturica never bothers to set the scene, introduce the characters, or even begin to sketch the historical turmoil that fuelled so much of their art.

The result is an indulgent, off-the-cuff movie that'll have anyone other than devoted No Smoking fans scratching their heads in bewilderment.

There are some nice moments (the saxophonist's spaniel, who barks along with his playing; the bass guitarist explaining the difference between the refined cool of bass playing and the ostentations of the guitar) but there's hardly any sense of perspective.

Horsing around in front of the camera, the band fulfil their reputation as anarchic rockers, but don't commit anything to film that's worth saving for prosperity.

Perhaps if Kusturica had let someone who wasn't a band member direct, there'd have been more chance of distance and commentary. As it stands, this is like spying on a stranger's home movies. Disappointing - especially since, as the concert footage proves, their music is so excellent.
