Panic Room

Interviewed by Paul Webber

You replaced Nicole Kidman on the film. How was that?

I liked it. I jumped into a movie once before, on "Maverick". What is nice about it is that you don't get time to think. You don't have to do the rehearsals. So many of the decisions are already made before you get on, so you can jump into it. I think I'm a good candidate for jumping into films - because I'm a director myself, so I know how movies are made and I can go the shorthand route without having to sit through endless meetings. If I over-prepare for a movie, I get very bored. It's important to stay passionate.

How do you feel about your character?

She's lost her confidence. She's been lied to and betrayed. She's lost her identity, and it doesn't help that her daughter is at that stage where she spends her whole day trying to make her look bad. She gets talked into buying this house she didn't want to live in, and into a panic room that she didn't want, which made her feel uneasy. She doesn't listen to her instincts - and she gets stuck in this house. Through the conflict, she learns to grab back her own identity and fight back.

Your character uses the panic room to hide from the intruders. Would you have one in your home?

No, I think it's a very bad idea! I think the movie says that! A panic room this decked out is not that common - they're pretty rare. However, if you do get an alarm system, the first thing a technician does when he comes in is designate a panic room - it's usually a closet. You have a phoneline that connects to the alarm company or the police department, so if your phones are cut, this one is live.

Did you appreciate the irony that you got the role because Nicole Kidman damaged her knee, but you were only able to take it because Russell Crowe hurt himself in rehearsals on your film, "Flora Plum"?

It is funny, isn't it? I remember emailing Russell saying, "I'm doing Nicole's movie - how ironic is that?" The good news is that, although my film shut down, "Panic Room" was able to continue.
