Les Rendez-Vous de Paris (Rendezvous in Paris) (1995)
PG

Set in 90s Paris, the three stories that make up "Les Rendez-Vous de Paris" are typical Rohmer. In each segment, the characters fall in and out of love and spend so much time examining their every thought and emotion that they never actually get around to doing anything.

Revolving around the city's cafes, galleries, parks, gardens, and back streets, each of these short stories centres on the theme of chance encounters. The first segment, "Rendez-Vous de 7 Heures", follows a girl whose wallet is stolen and who suspects her boyfriend may be having an affair. In "Les Bancs de Paris", a couple court each other through Paris' parks with mixed results and in the last story, "Mere et Enfant 1907", an artist follows a beautiful woman through the streets, only to discover she's just been married and only has an hour left in the city.

Shot on a tiny budget on 16mm film stock, "Les Rendez-Vous de Paris" is both a dreamy portrait of the French capital of love and a wonderful addition to Rohmer's work. Moving through Paris, from Montmartre to Bellville, La Villette to Montparnasse, the film shows how these urban locations help shape the characters' lives and feelings - with the city either liberating or oppressing them as they try and sort out the content of their hearts. It's a film that stands as one of the New Wave director's most enjoyable, and a beautifully frank take on the highs and lows of that foolish little thing called love.
