It's going to frighten some of you to see the heading "10th Anniversary Special Edition" across the top of this DVD release of "Basic Instinct" (is it really that long ago?). Whether you adore this movie as much as feminist critic Camille Paglia, or are forever fascinated by its roadkill qualities, this double disc DVD release is great entertainment.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture The picture quality on this DVD is so much better than the old VHS release. You can really zoom on in during key scenes. Why would we want to do this? Well, uh... is it hot in here?
Sound It may be a tad repetitive, but Jerry Goldsmith's music score does lend this film a classy veneer. Remixed into 5.1, both the Dolby and DTS mixes make the most of using the surround speakers to draw you into the movie.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Audio Commentary One (Disc One) We always look forward to Paul Verhoeven's straight-talking commentaries. He's joined by cinematographer Jan De Bont, and between them they dissect the movie comprehensively in its technical structure. Both talk quite a bit about the Hitchcockian references in the movie. It's for Sharon Stone's leg-crossing scene that both become most animated, though. "She's in command," says Verhoeven of Stone, "showing all ze zings." Not a commentary to be missed!
Audio Commentary Two (Disc One) You might expect a commentary by feminist critic Camille Paglia to be a two-hour rant against this movie, but it turns out it's her favourite flick! She analyses and elevates this film into a status that's laughably absurd, but she speaks with a passion that's hard to ignore (if impossible to understand).
Disc Two Special Features
Blonde Poison Verhoeven opens this 24-minute documentary with a comment that is slightly lost in his frenzied diction, but it is about his belief that Hitchcock would have loved to make this film. Turn the subtitles on to try and fathom Verhoeven and you soon find out that the subtitler doesn't have a clue either - "Hitchcock" becomes "Tetchko"!
Where Verhoeven becomes startlingly clear is when he talks about the sex scenes in the film. His instruction to the cast was, "There is no negotiating about nudity,". Most of the female leads approached for the role of Catherine Tramell backed off after reading the script. Verhoeven knew, though, that Sharon Stone was the one after he told her "You have to accept you do whatever I want", and she agreed.
Cleaning Up "Basic Instinct" In this four-minute section, you'll see how the TV version of the film differed from the theatrical cut. We'd love to list some of the examples to the changes made, but we couldn't repeat the language, or accurately convey how bad the dubbing is. This feature alone is worth the purchase price of the disc.
Storyboards and Screen Tests There's not much we can usually say about storyboards, but these are exceptionally raunchy. The actors will have been left in no doubt as to what they had to do after viewing this porn cavalcade. Also in this section are screen tests for Jeanne Tripplehorn and Sharon Stone.
Additional Extra Features Also on the disc is an original release featurette, a photo gallery, teaser, and trailer.
