Roberto Succo (2002)

In the South of France, 25-year-old 'Kurt' (Cassetti) seduces teenager L茅a (Le Besco) while she's holidaying with her family. Introducing L茅a to his very private world of fake identities, 'borrowed' cars, and guns, Kurt enthrals and terrifies her. Dismissing his fanciful stories about his past as nothing more than idle boasts, L茅a doesn't guess that her new boyfriend is actually Roberto Succo, the escaped asylum inmate who's being hunted by half the police in France in connection with a series of kidnappings, robberies, and murders.

Based on the true story of the one-man crime spree carried out by an escaped Italian mental patient in France in the late-80s, "Roberto Succo" has the look and feel of a docu-drama. According to writer-director C茅dric Kahn, his first draft of the screenplay stuck so closely to the facts of the case that the film's running time would have been around six hours. In streamlining the material into a more acceptable 120-minute timeframe, Kahn sacrifices some of the details, but none of the scope.

Cross-cutting between Succo's rampage and the police investigation it sparks, Kahn contrasts the killer's random violence with the slow and measured pace of the police detectives as they gather evidence and try to find a link between the crimes. It's a technique that heightens the film's tense atmosphere and complements the real source of the movie's haunting power - the character of Roberto Succo himself.

Angry, articulate, and all-too credible Cassetti (a non-professional actor) turns Succo into a terrifying character whose intense, staring eyes testify to the seemingly unquenchable, yet strangely aimless, desire that burns within him. By refusing to give us any insight into what fuels Succo's rampage, Kahn and Cassetti leave us with a sociopath who's as plausible as he is unfathomable. And that makes for particularly disturbing viewing.

In French with English subtitles.
