"Broader than Bernard Manning and no less subtle", Scary Movie 3 was funny and frightening, but for all the wrong reasons. Still, enough of you disagreed to make it one of the most popular comedies of the year so far.
Laughing All The Way To The Bank
No doubt the focal point of this extras package is a selection of ten deleted and further extended scenes, which include a 15-minute alternative ending: Hulk Vs. Aliens. If you thought the original ending was a bit iffy, you ain't seen nothing yet. The optional audio commentary by director David Zucker, producer Robert K Weiss, and writers Craig Mazin and Pat Proft does little to throw light on the matter, but evidently they think it's hilarious. You can't help but laugh though, during their commentary for the extended rap club sequence, when one of the guys advises: "I'd fast forward this if I were you."
Their feature commentary is just as raucous - dripping with sarcasm, bawdy wisecracks, scathing insults, and fits of laughter. The reason you'll laugh along is because the jokes are made mostly at each other's expense, and because they revel in the film's shortcomings. The overwhelming nonchalance is enhanced by the fact that none of the commentators can actually recall any of the scenes.
The breakdown of the alternate ending is even less edifying than the audio commentary. It's really just a superficial look at the visual effects that went into creating the showdown between Hulk and the invading aliens. You mightn't think rubberised foam suits make for state-of-the-art effects, but Ang Lee would surely turn green with envy if he got a look at this.
Who Speaketh Now?
In the Making Scary Movie 3 featurette, you won't be surprised when David Zucker reveals: "We were writing the script in a trailer between shots." As well as such probing interviews with cast and crew, you'll find reams of behind-the-scenes footage, and in the second 'making-of' featurette, you'll learn about the parallels between Scary Movie 3 and Shakespeare's The Tempest. (There were a lot less jiggling breast gags in The Tempest, though.)
By contrast, the blooper reel isn't that funny - unless you count the fact that Charlie Sheen has been sporting the same haircut since the mid 80s. However, if you loved the film, you'll find plenty to keep you amused here - plus it's cheaper than therapy.
