Pervy teen comedy The Girl Next Door, about a high school kid who falls in love with a porn star, is "occasionally funny yet startlingly offensive". Although it didn't break any records at the box office, it raised enough eyebrows in Hollywood to land director Luke Greenfield a three-picture deal with New Regency. Columbia Pictures has also greenlit Soul Mates, a romantic comedy inspired by the recent break-up of his relationship with a childhood sweetheart. So he's not all about boob jokes then, although you wouldn't guess it from this DVD.
Movie Boobies
A Look Next Door is an oddly humorless 'making of' featurette. The only laugh to be had comes courtesy of actress Elisha Cuthbert, who postulates on the heart-rending development of her character between behind-the-scenes footage of her prancing about in skimpy bra and panties. Yeah, that's deep.
On the other hand, The Eli Experience tries very hard to be funny, following the obnoxious Chris Marquette as he plays human pinball among a bevy of big-busted porno stars at an adult film convention. In truth, watching a porno with your parents would probably be less embarrassing than sitting through this cringe-worthy skit.
Guess what - there are more unbridled breasts in the Gag Reel. Perhaps this is to distract you from the scarcity of actual gags, although Richard Fancy's determinedly nonplussed reaction to being rubbed up by a surgically enhanced lap dancer is at least fairly amusing.
American Pie - Thickly Sliced
The 16 deleted and extended scenes are mostly made up of dull cutaways that, according to Greenfield's commentary, were cut due to time constraints. However, Greenfield's explanation for why the original ending was snipped is far more amusing. In it, Emile Hirsh stands proudly before the Capitol Building, which in test screenings was mistaken for The White House. Befuddled audience members inquired, "Why is he the President?" Greenfield puts it politely when he says, "America killed this scene."
Greenfield talks more about the brutal editing process in his feature commentary, but the overriding feeling is that he's holding back on all the juicy behind-the-scenes gossip, for as he explains, "I'm legally not allowed to say certain things." (A stunning revelation from the man who brought teen porn to the mainstream.)
Emile Hirsh and Elisha Cuthbert each offer commentaries for specific scenes presented in a separate menu. Again, Elisha bangs on about working with Greenfield to inject "more character and dialogue and stuff", while Emile burbles over her bikini shots and fleetingly adds, "An awesome actress."
In something of a non sequitur, there's also a half-interesting set report on upcoming Jimmy Fallon comedy Taxi, co-starring Queen Latifah. You'll also find a trailer for this and Johnny Knoxville starrer The Ringer - about a guy who pretends to be disabled in order to rig the Special Olympics. And suddenly, The Girl Next Door doesn't seem quite so tasteless...
