Kaal (Time Of Death) (2005)
15

Deep in the Indian jungle things are stirring in Soham's Kaal. After a series of mysterious deaths thought to be caused by a man-eating tiger munching up tourists, ace wildlife expert Krish Thapar (John Abraham) and his wife Riya (Esha Deol) set out to investigate. But their job is complicated by a group of thrill-seekers and before long the two groups are running for their lives in this slick but predictable thriller.

Chief of the thrill-seekers is Dev (Vivek Oberoi) who, together with Ishika (Lara Dutta), pays off officials in return for a spot of poaching. But the amateur hunters - together with fellow trekkers Krish and Riya - soon find themselves the prey as, one by one, it is they - rather than the tigers - who are facing extinction. Add in a strange jungle-dweller called Kali (Ajay Devgan), who pops up from nowhere to guide them to safety, and the film should have the audience whimpering, "Help, I'm a coward, get me out of here!"

"FAILS TO MAKE YOU JUMP OUT OF YOUR SEAT"

Instead you are left with the feeling that you've seen it all before. The textbook spooky music, gory slayings and mysterious disappearances straight out of countless Hollywood chillers like The Blair Witch Project, try but fail to make you jump out of your seat. Although it wins originality points for bringing big cats to Bollywood, Kaal is less thrill than shrill.
