This herb selection will give an aromatic display to cook with throughout the year.
Drill
Metal drill bits
Safety goggles
Watering can
Spade
Trowel
Some old containers
Two parts Peat free multi purpose compost and one part sterilised garden loam (Clean topsoil)
Solid plant pots
For his containers, Toby chose an old metal feeding trough and an old ammunitions box.
Firstly drill drainage holes in the bottom of the containers. It is always advisable to wear some safety goggles when performing this task. You can add some crocks to prevent drainage holes becoming blocked.
The old feed trough container was filled with the compost mix.
Most of the herbs Toby chose can be planted directly into the container, these included chives, marjoram, rosemary, sage and thyme. However some herb plants have a very territorial nature such as the mint. It is advisable to plant vigorous types in a separate pot and then sink the pot into the compost in the container. Any tender herbs such as the tarragon, that Toby planted, can also be planted in a pot so they can be lifted out and overwintered inside.
Once all the herbs have been planted, all that is required is a final watering in.
The old ammunition box was also filled with the same compost mix. This was then pre-watered. In this container Toby sowed a block of chervil, coriander and parsley seeds.
A fine sprinkling of compost over the surface of the seeds is all that is required and it’s complete.
With minimal maintenance, herbs can be enjoyed most of the year.
