Firstly dismantle one of the old drawers into pieces.
Now measure and cut one of the pieces so it fits snugly inside the other draw to form the shelf. Pilot drill and fix the shelf with woodscrews.
From another piece of the dismantled drawer, measure and cut a 2.5cm (1in) wide baton, the same width as the unit.
Pilot drill and screw the baton to the top of the unit at the rear.
To make the roof, cut another one of the pieces, so it is slightly longer than the width of the drawer.
Place this on top of the drawer, pilot drill and attach with woodscrews. This now forms the roof and the baton ensures it slopes forward.
If necessary rub the unit down with sandpaper, prepainting.
Paint the unit in your desired colour, using an exterior paint product, then put to one side to dry.
With the hammer flatten out a lead off cut. Use the tin snips to cut a square of lead that overlaps the roof.
On the front edge of the lead, mark out with the plant pot semicircles. Cut along this pattern to form a decorative edge. If desired another piece of lead can be cut in the same pattern and layered over the first piece.
Attach to a wall, and you will have a theatre for special plants like Toby’s auriculas.
