Climbers do exactly that. In nature, it's a means of getting to the light, using something else as a support. In the garden, climbers are great because they introduce another vertical element to the overall look. |

 |  Throughout April it is hung with nodding, violet-blue flowers. These are followed later in the year by attractive whiskery seed-heads.
Like all early-flowering clematis, it needs little pruning other than the removal of any dead or damaged growth after flowering. |
