There are dahlias for every situation, from giant exhibition varieties and cut flowers to miniature varieties. 'Grenadier' is an excellent garden variety that is particularly useful for plugging those late season gaps in the herbaceous border. Its double flowers are bright scarlet with petals that arch back. These are complemented perfectly by the dark green foliage. Feed weekly during the growing season and dead head regularly. When the foliabe begins to die back, cut stems to 15cm (6in) and lift the tubers and store in straw, wood shavings, or vermiculite in a frost-free place. Divide tubers in spring and plant out when danger of frost has passed. Aphids, caterpillars, slugs and earwigs may be a problem and plants may also be prone to powdery mildew.
