There are several types of winter cabbage, all sown in May and planted out in June for use from October to April according to variety. They include the winter white or Dutch varieties, cut or pulled up in November for storing in a cool shed. The most popular kinds are the large, dark green frost-hardy varieties such as 'January King', which stand for many weeks in good condition for use as required. Plant firmly, close together for small heads and wider apart for larger cabbages, earth up slightly in windy gardens, and clear away all yellow leaves.
