An attractive plant for the vegetable patch or potager, producing bright red stems and large, red-veined leaves. It tastes delicious when the fresh leaves are eaten young in a salad. Swiss chard is easy to grow from seed and makes a colourful addition to any garden. Sow the seeds in the greenhouse or under cloches in March. Sow outdoors in April into shallow drills. When harvesting, remove the outer leaves and save the younger, central ones to pick later.
