The next time you eat peanuts from the shell, why not try planting some, because you may be able to cultivate your own. The peanut plant has attractive, dark green divided leaves and yellow flowers. Its history is fascinating: as soon as blooms are pollinated, the stem of the flower bends towards the ground, eventually forcing the developing nuts into the soil. This is why some people call them 'groundnuts'. It requires a warm summer to produce fruit in the UK, but if you can grow them in a cold frame they should reliably produce nuts.
