Timperley Early is a traditional rhubarb variety widely grown commercially in Northern England and valued for its early first cropping in February. Once established, a couple of plants will provide you with succulent, red-based stems with a delicious flavour from February to May. Establish new crowns by planting into well dug and manured ground from November to March, leave for 12-18 months before harvesting the edible leaf stalks. It is also suitable for forcing if you want to produce an even earlier crop. A rhubarb bed will yield a good crop for ten to twelve years before needing lifting, dividing and replanting. Water well in dry seasons and apply a mulch over winter, manure or garden compost will help to feed the plants for continued cropping each year. Remove flower spikes as they appear and clear away dead leaves throughout summer and autumn
