These are plants for the border, where they can be arranged in groups for height and colour among other tall plants. They are also ideal for cutting, lasting well in water and appreciated for their long stems, as well as the range of colours of their single dahlia-like blooms, 8cm (3in) or more across. They are undemanding plants, originally from Mexico and flourishing in warm sun and poor soils. The Sonata Series is an award- winning strain, producing compact plants with large red, rose, pink and white flowers, available as a mixture or in single colours. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it their Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
