Sometimes called salad onions, this popular and fast-growing crop produces slim, crisp mildly flavoured white onions (red and white in some varieties) with little or no swollen bulb at the base until they are very mature their flowers are numerous, in rounded heads, as shown here. If sown in succession, they can be ready for use from spring to late autumn. They are an ideal catch crop for sowing wherever there is space, and in warm weather may be ready for harvest after eight to ten weeks. Always sow little and often, and change to an extra hardy variety in August for spring use. The Royal Horticultural Society has given 'White Lisbon' its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
