Golden garlic is perhaps the most popular ornamental onion, and certainly one of the easiest to grow. An old traditional cottage garden plant, it is happy in full sun but also in partial shade, which makes it a valuable bulb for planting under deciduous trees and shrubs, and also at the foot of hedges where it will soon spread into a naturalised carpet of bright golden stars which appear early every summer. Although a native of Spain and other warm areas of the Mediterranean, the bulbs are quite durable in our climate as long as the soil is well-drained. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
