Alan Titchmarsh recommends 'Midnight Blue' for smaller gardens as it only grows to 45cm (18in) high. Its compact size means that it is ideal for growing in containers on the patio, as well as in the ground. It produces trumpet-shaped, very dark blue flowers in mid- to late summer. Grow in well-drained but moist soil in full sun. A sheltered position is best. In colder areas, it may need to be overwintered indoors.
