The most popular Genistas grown in gardens are dwarf or compact varieties. This species is an outstanding dwarf shrub which makes a shapely rounded bush, with semi-prostrate main branches spreading and producing numerous slender upright shoots. It's covered in small golden blooms in late spring and early summer. This species comes from the dry sunny hillsides of southern France and northern Spain, and revels in similar situations, reacting to more fertile soils by decreased flowering. Trim lightly after flowering to keep plants dense. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
