A classic Mediterranean herb, commercially distilled for its aromatic oil and used for flavouring. Plants are evergreen in all but the coldest gardens, their dark leaves neat and narrow, and often harvested in summer for drying. The flowers are typically blue, but also available in other colours, and appear over a long season, especially if plants are deadheaded in late summer. All varieties are very attractive perennials, and make attractive evergreen highlights in the winter flower border, and also neat dwarf hedges.
