Sweet peas are the nation's favourite annuals, and they are divided into the modern Spencer types and the old-fashioned sorts that include 'Matucana'. This variety is close to the wild plant and has strongly scented maroon and purple flowers. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil and in full sun. Provide support, and remove dead flowers regularly.
