Climbing french beans are a versatile crop, ready for harvest earlier than runner beans and often setting more readily in all weathers. They may be sown early for growing under glass, and the later pods can be left for shelling as haricot beans. There are many different kinds and colours, many of them round-podded, like 'Sultana' although there are flat-podded varieties too. Plants need the same kind of support as runner beans, and need shelter from cold winds. Mulch, and water regularly from the start of flowering.
