Bergamot has very distinctive flower-heads made up of curving tube-shaped flowers pealing out from the centre, creating a shaggy dome of petals. The plant flowers from mid to late summer, and blooms almost continuously if deadheaded periodically. The foliage is aromatic and leaves are sometimes picked for potpourri. Being attractive to bees it is a good plant for wildlife gardens. On soil that stays moist, plants can spread fairly quickly so clumps may need to be divided about every three years. It can also tolerate clay soil.
