Though not as commonly grown as some summer bedding plants such as petunias or marigolds, the Mexican sunflower is a useful plant for adding height to displays, standing up to 1.8m (6ft) tall. The bright orange flowers appear from late summer to early autumn and last well when cut for the vase. Grow seed at 13C to 18C (55C to 64F) in mid- to late spring. Wait until after the danger of frosts has passed before planting out in a sunny, well-drained spot in the garden. Protect plants from slugs and snails.
