School Report in Hampshire

Children across Hampshire are taking part in the 大象传媒's School Report Project - making the news, finding their own stories and asking the questions which they'd like answers to.

One of the schools taking part in 大象传媒 School Report is St George Roman Catholic Boys School in Swaythling. Accompanied by 大象传媒 Radio Solent reporter Dominic Blake, their news team went on the search for stories at Marwell Zoo.

They were taken round by Bill - an animal information officer and former head keeper. He proved a valuable source of interesting stories about a very special giraffe and some endangered species. The team also did a story on Year 7s who held a quiz to raise money to adopt a chipmunk.

The boys recorded interviews and are spending the day compiling TV, radio and online reports on the stories they've discovered and packaging it along with the current news of the day.

Teacher Chris King explained: "It gave the boys the chance to get some experience of hands-on journalism - formulating their own questions and coming up with nice imaginative ideas for things to film."

Meanwhile in Winchester, Westgate School pupils Jack and Leanne were news anchor presenters for the day: "It's a little bit nerve-wracking but it's ok."

The rest of the team put the bulletin and web pages together.听 Teacher Hilary Byford explained how it had been a good learning experience: "They've had to research, edit and write all their scripts. They have produced their own web pages so there has been a lot of writing as well."

Over 270 other schools around the UK are also making and broadcasting their own video, audio and text-based news with the help of the 大象传媒 via the School Report project.

On this UK-wide News Day, thousands of 11 to 14-year-olds will put into practice what they have been learnt using resources on the 大象传媒 News website.

The stories which matter to them, and their news-making activities, are being featured across the 大象传媒, on TV, radio and online. In addition, a dedicated, day-long School Report TV channel and radio station will stream live coverage on the School Report website and red button service.
