After 40 days of travelling in his specially modified solo aircraft, 59 year old Manuel Queiroz has finally made it home to the UK. His attempt to break the record for a round the world flight took him to some of the remotest places on earth. Unfortunately Manuel hasn't succeeded in breaking the world record. To do so he had to complete his trip by Tuesday 23 March, so the world record still remains with the current holder - Hans Georg Schmid. A former rally driver, he recently closed his own successful business restoring and servicing classic, luxury and sports cars to concentrate on the challenge.

He says his wife Jill, 45, and daughter Natalie, 29, are fully behind his record attempt. "I think there is an element of them thinking that I am barking mad but they have been great. "My wife has been fantastic and has supported me in the most amazing way despite having reservations about what I am going to do. "She also has a pilots licence so can appreciate the dangers of doing it." The success or failure of the record attempt could depend on the weather he encounters during the journey. "My greatest fear is the weather because that really dictates whether you can fly or not. I hope that it is kind to me." |
