World record attempt pilot and his plane
Manuel Queiroz checks his plane

Round the world record flight

After a gruelling journey, Manuel Queiroz has made it safely back to the UK. However, the world record remains in the hands of its previous holder...

Factfile

  • He will fly around the world in 16 stages via the UK, Malta, Egypt, Oman, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Philippines, Mariana Islands, Kiribati, Hawaii, California, Texas, Ohio, Newfoundland, Portugal, and then back to the UK.
  • The aircraft he's flying in has a top speed of around 200 mph.
  • It can fly at around 20,000 feet
  • It is only 20 feet long with a wingspan of 23 feet.
  • The record is currently held by Hans Georg Schmid who completed his chosen course of 44,055 km from Zurich to Zurich in 27 days, n an average speed of 69.87 km/h.

Manuel's progress round the world

After 40 days of travelling in his specially modified solo aircraft, 59 year old Manuel Queiroz has finally made it home to the UK.

His attempt to break the record for a round the world flight took him to some of the remotest places on earth.

Unfortunately Manuel hasn't succeeded in breaking the world record.

To do so he had to complete his trip by Tuesday 23 March, so the world record still remains with the current holder - Hans Georg Schmid.

A former rally driver, he recently closed his own successful business restoring and servicing classic, luxury and sports cars to concentrate on the challenge.

"I have spent three years preparing the aircraft so it is suitable for this type of adventure.

"The main thing is to ensure that there are more fuel tanks and that the plane's structure is able to cope with their extra weight."

He's been sleeping at the stops on the way and takes a small amount of food on board for the hours that he spends airborne.

He says his wife Jill, 45, and daughter Natalie, 29, are fully behind his record attempt.

"I think there is an element of them thinking that I am barking mad but they have been great.

"My wife has been fantastic and has supported me in the most amazing way despite having reservations about what I am going to do.

"She also has a pilots licence so can appreciate the dangers of doing it."

The success or failure of the record attempt could depend on the weather he encounters during the journey.

"My greatest fear is the weather because that really dictates whether you can fly or not. I hope that it is kind to me."
