The
largest collection of telephone kiosks in the world, at Avoncroft
Museum of Historic Buildings in Bromsgrove, will be officially
reopened following a major refurbishment and installation of additional
displays.
The
refurbishment is part of BT's 拢6 million telecommunications
heritage project, Connected Earth.
Telephone
kiosks, introduced in 1921 came to play an essential role in people's
lives, before telephones in the home became commonplace. The
telephone box contines to survive despite the fact that mobile phones
are so popular.
The
exhibition at Avoncroft celebrates the ingenuity which went into
the design of these kiosks, and explores how they have had an impact
on the history of the British.
As
well as being the UK's definitive collection of telephone and roadside
kiosks, the exhibition features many other former BT collections,
including small telephone exchanges, historic vehicles and street
furniture.
