Christine
Skirrows tells 大象传媒 Hereford and Worcester's Rachel Willis more about
her work:
"I
have been interested in art from an early age but started my hobby
using oil paints which I found limiting.
"I
saw a programme on TV featuring a local pastel artist who described
this medium and gave hints on how he acheived his beautiful portraits
- I was hooked!
"Now
I find that with arthritis which affects my grip that pastels are
the easiest to use.
"I
have never worked on any specific project in this area but as the
Programme secretary of Redditch Art Circle I research and book a
variety of artists who demonstrate at our meetings. I am also very
involved in organising the groups exhibitions and this year we have
four.
"We
had a spring exhibition in the Kingfisher Centre closely followed
by our part in the C.A.F.E (Community Arts Festival Event) when
we displayed over 60 paintings in Redditch Library.
"In
October we have our Autumn exhibition in the Kingfisher Centre and
that is also closely followed by an exhibition entitled ' Seasonal
Studies' in Forge Mill Museum.
Current
projects
"I
am currently working on a painting of poppies which I will be putting
in the Dodford Church Fete which is on Friday and Saturday 4th and
5th July.

Sea
Nymph by Christine Skirrow |
"My
most popular painting was called 'Sea Nymph' which won the Golden
Palette (Jack Wiseman) award at Cofton Hackett Art Society (now
renamed Lickey Art Society). It was voted for by artists and public
alike.
"I
also won Redditch Art Circle's silver trophy in 1987 for a painting
entitled 'Purr-fect Partners' In the near future I will be learning
to design a website to display my work.
"I
have very limited mobility and find that I have to rely heavily
on friends to set up and display my exhibitions. I feel that I am
gradually wearing my friends out with this very hard work! Possibly
having a website is the way forward. I love digital photography
and find it a very useful asset to my art. I aim to 'let my fingers
do the walking' so to speak!
"My
tips for local artists are not be afraid of using pastel as a painting
medium. A lot of people assume it is a temporary medium but Degas
used it many years ago! It is longer lasting in permanancy as any
oil paints.
"As
far as using pastel I find I can 'fine tune' and produce fine detail
by using pastel pencils. You can be set up and be prolific in pastel
painting for about 拢25.".
