Worcester
City Award Scheme and
the local architectural practice, DJD Architects,
the building contractor and the client are to be
presented with Commendations by the Mayor at
an Award Ceremony at the Mayor聮s Parlour on
Thursday 11th December.
Practice
principal and project architect David
Davis praised his clients for their faith in the
adventurous design proposals and for their
enthusiasm and support throughout the project.
The
design solution for the new entrance of the
church is a new tent like folded canopy floating
above, carried by a clearly expressed tubular
steel structure and separated from the retained
masonry structure below by glazing.
The
foyer area is increased by extending the enclosure with visually
lightweight, part glazed, screens.
The
canopy echoes the form of folded hands
and extends beyond the immediate enclosure
of the entrance area reaching out to the street
to welcome the congregation.

Our
Lady Queen of Peace RC Church |
The
entrance provides a strong visual signpost for this previously understated
church.
The
design solution for the new entrance of the Our Lady Queen of Peace
RC Church was originally constructed in 1951.
Despite
its聮 gabled facade the church is quite subdued in its聮
contribution to the street scene and lies almost unnoticed by passers
by.
The
crisp detailing and angular form of the standing seam metal sheeting
and tubular structure of the canopy is softened metal sheeting and
tubular structure of the canopy is softened by the use of diagonal
ash boarding to the canopy soffit.
The
same material was chosen for torceshe internal and external areas
to enhance the concept of the interior reaching out to areas to
enhance the concept of the interior reaching out to the external
world.
Paving,
railings and gates were replaced to improve the approach to the
church.
The
striking new additions to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church were blessed
by Archbishop Maurice Couve de Church Murville on Friday 23rd May
2003.
