If
you need reminding why Harold Pinter is such an important figure
in the history of English Theatre then get along to the Rose Theatre
in Kidderminster to see their production of his classic play The
Birthday Party.
This was Pinter's first full length play and was first produced
back in 1958.
It was one of the plays that dragged English Theatre kicking and
screaming from the cosy world of weekly rep. into the gritty realistic
world of playwrights like Pinter and Osbourne.
Mind you, audiences at the time didn't want to be dragged anywhere
kicking and screaming, and the play closed in the West End after
only a week.
Fortunately that wasn't the end of the play, or of Harold Pinter's
career.
The Nonentities, the resident amateur company at the Rose, will
have much better houses than there were for that first West End
run of The Birthday Party.
You can go along and remind yourself what all the fuss was about
back in the late 1950's.
