Journey's
End may be 75 years old - this is the anniversary production - but
R.C.Sherriff's play still retains its power to shock and move.
The play is set in 1918, in the British trenches at St Quentin.
A company of men prepare for a daring raid across No Mans Land,
in advance of the long awaited German offensive - a day that saw
the deaths of 38,000 men.
The play was based on the author's own experience of the Front and
life in the trenches.
It centres on the relationship between the leader of the company
- a brave man who's turned to drink to help him cope with the horrors
of the war - and two other officers.
One is an older man who has become like a father figure and the
other is someone who has idolised him since they were at school
together.
The play stars Philip Franks, best known for his
roles in The Darling Buds of May and Heartbeat.
Tom Wisdom, who's appeared in Coronation Street, is also in the
cast.
