The survivors
The crew of the BOAC Flight 251 were not as lucky as the passengers. The Engineering Officer Tom Smith (standing third from right) damaged his arm, the Second Steward 'Jerry' Green had hurt his ankle, and the First Officer Ted Haslam (second from left, with his head bandaged) received a gash to his head. However, they were fortunate that the aircraft did not catch fire - they had run out of fuel.
This photo was taken soon after the survivors were joined by a French medical team from Dakar, who had parachuted into the crash scene late in the afternoon of 26 May. The leader of the team, and its Medical Officer, Colonel Lartigau (centre of the row, bare-chested and wearing a beret) had not made a parachute jump for seven years.
