Frederick Henry Johnson Hall was born in 1870 at High Barnes, Sunderland, to Mary Ann Hall. Frederick's father is not known, but he was brought up as the son of John Hall, who was really his grandfather, at Urpeth. Frederick enlisted in the army aged 18, serving in the Royal Horse Artillery in India, fighting in the Boer War in South Africa, and also fighting in World War One. By had a family of nine children, having married Margaret Laverick in 1898. After the war, Frederick ran a hostel in Newcastle, where he died, in 1944.
