How the site worked: User journey

A hypothetical user journey for a first-time user:

1. User arrived at the site and saw the call to action on the front page: 'Contribute your military and home front stories. A growing archive of wartime memories. Sign in to add your story or that of your family.'

2. User clicked on the 'Start writing' button.

3. User arrived at the Contribute page, which gave information on what kind of stories to contribute, how to scan and add a photo, what would happen to the story.

4. User clicked on the 'Write your story' button, and was taken to a page with the following message: 'You need to login before you can make a contribution to the People's War site. If you have already registered with People's War, click here to log in. If you have not yet registered with People's War, click here to register now. Registration is completely free and only takes a minute. If you would like to know how it works, you can read more in the Help section.'

5. User clicked to register and was taken to the Single Sign-on registration page. Registration allowed the user to use his/her login and password on any 大象传媒 site that required a login.

6. The Single Sign-on process required the user to click on a link in an email before the account was activated. (To prevent other people signing up on their behalf.) The page the user visited via the email contained a link that lead them to the Contribute form.

7. The user added his/her stories and photographs to the site via the Contribute form, which provided a template in which to write stories.

8. Every registered user could leave messages at the bottom of each story on the site, to communicate directly with that story's author.

9. From the Personal Page, each user could keep track of all the contributions he/she made to the site, with links to his/her stories and forum messages.
