How the site worked: House Rules

Users to the site were required to register on the site, where they signed up to the following terms and House Rules.

Remember the golden rule: Treat others with respect.

About contributing to the site
Keep your contributions civil, tasteful and relevant. We're committed to providing an atmosphere in which friendly and mature dialogue takes place. Therefore:

No flaming. Flaming means sending unlawful, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, racially offensive, or otherwise objectionable material, and it is not acceptable. Read more about what defamation means.

Swear words will be ****d out. The moderators will **** out the entire word, except for the first and last letters.

No spamming or flooding. Spamming is the posting of the same (or very similar) messages to lots of forums. Flooding is when the same (or a very similar) message is posted over and over again to the same conversation. It's especially antisocial if it's off-topic for those forums. If you do this, we will remove your postings, and possibly your account.

Please think carefully before revealing personal information on the site. You may include your own personal email address in postings, but please remember that people may use it to send emails you don't want to receive, like adverts or offensive material. If you are sure that you want people to be able to contact you like this, we recommend you set up a new email account specifically for this purpose. If you are under 16, please do not reveal any personal information.

It is not acceptable to publicise anyone else's contact details other than your own, and we will remove any postal addresses or telephone numbers from postings. However, it is acceptable to include general contact details for organisations, for example, but you must only include publicly available details, such as the address of library or museum.

Be patient. Users of all ages and abilities will be taking part in the community.

No advertising.

No spoilers - messages that contain plot developments which haven't been transmitted on terrestrial television will be deleted.

Posts containing languages other than English may be removed.

Impersonating someone else is unacceptable, as is adopting an inappropriate screen name (one that is vulgar, offensive, etc.)

Please use only appropriate and suitable URLs (website addresses) in your postings. Links to pornography, commercial services or other inappropriate content will be deleted at our discretion. Any URLs you include will be checked by a moderator.

Please don't abuse the complaints system. It exists to enable visitors to let us know about content which breaks these rules. Please do not use the complaints system to alert us to multiple postings, spelling mistakes and so on. Anyone who abuses the complaints system repeatedly may have their account suspended.

Copyright and the law
You own the copyright in your postings, articles and pictures, but you also agree to grant the 大象传媒 a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive, sublicenseable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, play, and exercise all copyright and publicity rights with respect to any such work worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any media now known or later developed for the full term of any rights that may exist in such content, consistent with privacy restrictions set forth in the 大象传媒's Privacy Policy.

If you do not wish to grant such rights to the 大象传媒, it is suggested that you do not submit your contribution to this site.

By submitting your contribution to this site, you also warrant that such contribution is:

  • your own original work and that you have the right to make it available to the 大象传媒 for all the purposes specified above
  • is not defamatory
  • does not infringe any law

You also agree to indemnify the 大象传媒 against all legal fees, damages and other expenses that may be incurred by the 大象传媒 as a result of your breach of the above warranty.

You also agree to waive any moral rights in your contribution for the purposes of its submission to and publication on the 大象传媒 site and the other purposes specified above.

You may not post any defamatory or illegal material of any nature. This includes text, graphics, video, and/or audio. Posting a message with the intention of committing or condoning an illegal act is strictly prohibited.

You may not violate, plagiarise, or infringe on the rights of third parties including copyright, trademark, trade secret, privacy, personal, publicity, or proprietary rights. Where appropriate, we recommend that you seek permission to share the stories of the people your articles are based on. You can read more about copyright here.

If there is any conflict between these Terms and Conditions and/or specific terms appearing elsewhere on this site relating to specific material then the latter shall prevail.

About your privacy
Our registration process requires you to supply us with your email details, but we will only use this information to validate your access to the discussions and for other service administration purposes. However, we may also wish to contact a small number of contributors to ask them to participate in a related television programme.

The 大象传媒 may wish to pass on the editorial contents of the site, but not your personal registration details, to a reputable third party, if it is deemed necessary to store the information as part of the creation of a national archive.

The 大象传媒 complies with the 1998 Data Protection Act.

If you're under age 16
Please get permission from your parent or guardian before taking part in any 大象传媒i discussion.

Never reveal any personal information about yourself (for example: your telephone number, mobile phone number, school name, home address or email address).

Disciplinary procedure
If you fail to abide by these House Rules, then the following procedure will be followed in most cases. Please note that the 大象传媒 reserves the right to terminate accounts immediately at its discretion (in the event of such things as criminal behaviour or personal abuse of staff, for example). The 大象传媒 may also implement a period of individual pre-moderation instead of or in addition to the following, at our discretion.

For the first offence you will receive an official warning.

A second offence will mean that your account is suspended for seven days.

A third offence will mean a suspension period of one month.

A fourth offence will result in your account being closed permanently.

In each case the warning or suspension notice will be sent to the email address in your preferences, explaining the nature of the transgression. If this email address bounces, then the warning or suspension notice will be posted to your Personal Space. While suspended, returning to the site by creating another account will constitute a further offence and will extend the suspension to the next period, or will result in your account being closed permanently.

大象传媒i reserves the right to delete any posting, at any time, for any reason, and is under no obligation to publish any work submitted.

大象传媒 Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

This policy covers the 大象传媒鈥檚 use of personal information that the 大象传媒 collects when you use bbc.co.uk. The policy also gives you information about cookies; 大象传媒 and third parties' use of cookies; and how you may reject such cookies.

From time to time, you will be asked to submit personal information about yourself (e.g. name and email address) in order to receive or use services on our website. Such services include newsletters, competitions, live chats, message boards and bbc.co.uk membership.

By entering your details in the fields requested, you enable the 大象传媒 and its service providers to provide you with the services you select. Whenever you provide such personal information, we will treat that information in accordance with this policy. When using your personal information the 大象传媒 will act in accordance with current legislation and aim to meet current Internet best practice.

2. Visitor Information

During the course of any visit to bbc.co.uk, the pages you see, along with a short text file called a 'cookie', are downloaded to your computer. Many websites do this, because cookies enable website publishers to do useful things like find out whether the computer (and probably its user) has visited the website before. This is done on a repeat visit by checking to see, and finding, the cookie left there on the last visit.

Information supplied by cookies can help us to provide you with a better online user experience and assist us to analyse the profile of our visitors. For example: if on a previous visit you went to our education pages, we might find this out from your cookie and highlight educational information on your second and subsequent visits.

Nielsen//Netratings, an independent measurement and research company, gathers non-personal information regarding the visitors to our website on our behalf using cookies, log file data and code which is embedded on our website. The 大象传媒 uses this type of information, as with that obtained from other cookies used on the site, to help it improve the services to its users. If you wish to reject Nielsen//Netratings' cookie, you can use the process set out below in point 7. To Totally Opt-Out of Nielsen//Netratings collecting any data regarding your interaction on bbc.co.uk, use the Opt-Out in their Privacy and Cookie Policy at http://www.netratings.com/privacy.jsp?section=leg_scs.

3. What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small amount of data, which often includes an anonymous unique identifier that is sent to your browser from a website's computer and stored on your computer's hard drive. Each website can send its own cookie to your browser if your browser's preferences allow it, but (to protect your privacy) your browser only permits a web site to access the cookies it has already sent to you, not the cookies sent to you by other sites.

Many sites do this whenever a user visits their website in order to track online traffic flows.

Cookies record information about your online preferences. Users have the opportunity to set their computers to accept all cookies, to notify them when a cookie is issued, or not to receive cookies at any time. The last of these, of course, means that certain personalised services cannot then be provided to that user user and accordingly you may not be able to take full advantage of all of the bbc.co.uk features. Each browser is different, so check the "Help" menu of your browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences.

If you have set your computer to reject cookies you can still browse bbc.co.uk anonymously until such time as you wish to register for bbc.co.uk services. For further information on cookies please visit www.aboutcookies.org.

4. Use and storage of your personal information

When you supply any personal information to bbc.co.uk (e.g. for competitions, bbc.co.uk Community services or bbc.co.uk membership) we have legal obligations towards you in the way we use those data. We must collect the information fairly, that is, we must explain how we will use it (see the notices on particular webpages that let you know why we are requesting the information) and tell you if we want to pass the information on to anyone else.

In general, any information you provide to the 大象传媒 will only be used within the 大象传媒 and by its agents and service providers. Your information will be disclosed where we are obliged or permitted by law. Also, if you post or send offensive, inappropriate or objectionable content anywhere on or to bbc.co.uk or otherwise engage in any disruptive behaviour on bbc.co.uk, the 大象传媒 can use whatever information that is available to it about you to stop such behaviour. This may involve informing relevant third parties such as your employer, school e-mail/Internet provider and law enforcement agencies about the content and your behaviour.

We will hold your personal information on our systems for as long as you use the service you have requested, and remove it in the event that the purpose has been met, or, in the case of bbc.co.uk membership you no longer wish to continue your registration as a bbc.co.uk member. For safety reasons, however, the 大象传媒 may store messaging transcript data (including message content, member names, times and dates) arising from the use of bbc.co.uk Community services such as Connector for a period of six months. Where personal information is held for people who are not yet registered but have taken part in other bbc.co.uk services (e.g. competitions), that information will be held as long as is necessary to ensure that the service is run smoothly. We will ensure that all personal information supplied is held securely, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

If you are notified on a bbc.co.uk site that your information may be used to allow the 大象传媒 to contact you for "service administration purposes", this means that the 大象传媒 may contact you for a number of purposes related to the service you have signed up for. For example, we may wish to provide you with password reminders or notify you that the particular service has been suspended for maintenance. We will not contact you for promotional purposes, such as notifying you of improvements to the service or new services on bbc.co.uk unless you specifically agree to be contacted for such purposes at the time you submit your information on the site, or at a later time if you sign up specifically to receive such promotional information.

5. Access to your personal information

You have the right to request a copy of the personal information the 大象传媒 holds about you and to have any inaccuracies corrected. (We charge 艁10 for information requests.) Please address requests to the Data Protection Officer, MC3 D1, Media Village, 201 Wood Lane, London, W12 7TQ (Email: dpa.officer@bbc.co.uk).

6. Users 16 and under

If you are aged 16 or under, please get your parent/guardian's permission beforehand whenever you provide personal information to the 大象传媒's website. Users without this consent are not allowed to provide us with personal information.
